YUMI TERAUCHI

Criative Director , Designer

After formative years in interior design offices and retail environments, Yumi Terauchi established Terauchi Design Office Co., Ltd. in 1998.
Since then, her practice has unfolded across creative direction, product design, interiors, and art—moving fluidly between disciplines.
At the core of her work lies a quiet pursuit: to perceive “something that is already there.”
Not to impose form, but to listen—to traces of presence, to the atmosphere held within materials, to the subtle dialogue between object, space, and human perception.
Her creations draw from nature, landscape, and the depth of Japanese aesthetics—where light, shadow, and emptiness are not absence, but presence.
Each work emerges as a vessel of stillness, where form and void give rise to a sense of place.
Her work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Good Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award, resonating both in Japan and internationally.
In 2022, she published the art book There I sense something, recipient of the Grand Prize at the 25th Japan Self-Publishing Culture Awards.
In Karatsu, Saga, she established TOKIWAGI—a space where craft and contemporary sensibility intersect—extending her practice beyond creation into a platform for dialogue and new perspectives.
